What is a VPN and how it works?

Whether or not you use a VPN, you’ve probably heard speak of them. VPN stands for virtual private network.

What is a virtual private network (VPN) ?

A Virtual Private Network is a technology which creates a network, and that network is virtually private meaning that it is a private point-to-point connection between multiple devices or networks over a shared or public network such as the internet.

Internet connections by default are unencrypted and unsafe. The VPN encrypts your data using a combination of software and hardware.

How does a VPN work ?

To understand how a VPN works, you must first understand a little about how the internet works.

When you send a request online (accessing a website, playing an online game, etc.), the request is made through your local network (LAN). Meaning your data (everything that you do and the device) is visible and trackable.

When you connect to the internet through a VPN server, things change. The request won’t be made through your LAN, but it’ll be made through the VPN connection. All the data you send is encrypted. The encryption can differ and it depends on the VPN server configuration.

The VPN client encrypts your data with the configured encryption. At this point your internet provider (ISP) or any one else (like hackers) won’t be able to read it.

When the data reaches the VPN server, it gets decrypted and sent forward to the website you want to access. The website won’t see your IP and location but the IP and location of the VPN server you’re connected to.
