How to install and configure OpenVPN on Windows

The OpenVPN client should work with any Windows version however we strongly recommend to use SoftEther for Windows

The first step is to download the OpenVPN configuration files. You can download them from your account under “Server list”.

If you don’t have an account you can get one for FREE from here.

To start installing OpenVPN please follow the steps below.

  • First you need to get the OpenVPN client from the official site.
  • Download the installer for your Windows version, 32 or 64 bit.
  • After finishing the download start the installation by opening the openvpn-install file that you have downloaded.
  • It will ask if you allow the program to make changes to your computer, click “yes”.

Click Next >
Click “I Agree” to proceed

Leave the selected components as they are and click Next >

If you want a different installation folder change the destination, if not just click Install.

Check the “Always trust software..” box and click Install.

Uncheck the “Show Readme” box if you don’t want to see the Readme file and click Finish.

Now you have to copy the configuration files and certificates in the config folder of the OpenVPN Client (Program files / OpenVPN / Config).

For Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, go to Program files / OpenVPN / bin and right click on the openvpn-gui.exe file. Choose properties, go to compatibility tab, check the “Run this program in compatibility mode” option and select Windows Vista Service Pack 2. At the bottom check the “Run this program as an administrator” option.

Now start OpenVPN from your desktop icon. In the windows menu bar you will see the OpenVPN icon, right click on it and choose a VPN server location, click connect and enter your username and password.

Please NOTE! You will have to specify the HUB name based on your account, in the user field.
